Red Rock Canyon National Conservation
Area
Located 10 miles west of Las
Vegas, this 197,000-acre conservation area operated
by the Bureau of Land Management provides a totally
different view. No lights, no slot machines, and
no shows. The only show you will see here is pure
nature. Of course you'll see plenty of various
shaped red sandstone for which it is named after.
But plenty of wildlife such as birds, snakes,
burros, and bighorn sheep are common sights among
this desert landscape.
You can plan a variety of activities
within the area, however you are asked to respect
the area by leaving it as you found it. For the
adventurous types; hiking, backpacking and camping,
bicycling, and climbing are your choices. For
the non-adventurous type, there are 13 miles of
scenic driving with picnic areas along the route.
If you're planning to go, keep in mind that this
is a desert. Bring plenty of water and food -
no matter what activity you choose, even driving.
