Could Spock Win Big in Atlantic City?

Logic dictates that being human is, "a being of illogical proportions." That is what I think when I have seen the following scenario multiple times. A gambler will come into a blackjack game, lose 6 hands in a row, and dig into their wallet for more dough, and continue to lose countless more hands. Why? They become desperate at losing their initial wad of money, and abandon their strategy in hopes of winning their losses back. A rainy day in Atlantic City at the blackjack tables enlightened by conversational topics of science fiction and remembrances of old Star Trek episodes made me think of the scenario, "What if Spock could play blackjack? Could he win?"

Depending on how well (or not so well) a gambling session goes for a particular gambler, gamblers will very often change their strategies if "things are not going well." Some opt to switch tables, some decide to take a breather and go to the restaurant, bathroom, hotel room, spa, etc. Some simply decide to sit at that same table and change or completely reverse their blackjack strategy.

Every so often a gambler will change their mind if their strategy is not working. How many times have you sat at a table and been angry enough to reach across and choke the player at the end of the table for making a stupid or ridiculous hit or split that results in a loss for the entire table? Relax. It's part of the game and the odds.

For most logical people, observations of current and past events weigh on what we predict will happen in the future. For most of those people this is a good strategy, especially if you are a card counter. Otherwise, hunches or 'gut feelings' often fail at the expense of logic, and at the expense of other players too. After all, we are human.

So to answer the question, "Could Spock Win Big in Atlantic City?" Theoretically, yes. Probability of that happening - 0.000001% - the casino management would throw him out in a heartbeat. The "Eye in the Sky" would then closely watch anyone with pointy ears.

I can see it now. Newspaper headline story,

Intergalactic Profiling by Casino Authorities.

Be well and prosper!
